Reporting to the Controller, the Tax Accountant is responsible for building and managing the tax team and compliance with state and local tax laws and regulations. We are looking for a team player who can demonstrate excellent communication and interpersonal skills.


This key position is primarily focused on sales tax, use tax, property tax and tax audit support.

Responsibilities

  • Ensure compliance with state and local tax regulations, staying updated on changes in tax laws.
  • Research and prepare documentation relating to tax rate changes impacting the Company.
  • File accurate sales and use tax returns with tax authorities in a timely manner.
  • Prepare and maintain tax account analysis, reconciliations, and monthly journal entries.
  • Review sales transactions to determine taxability and appropriate tax rates and manage and validate customer exemption certificates.
  • Maintain organized and accurate records of sales and use tax transactions, including documentation to support tax filings.
  • Provide documentation and support during audits.
  • Identify opportunities for process improvement in sales and use tax compliance, implementing best practices to enhance efficiency and accuracy.
  • Communicate with internal teams, tax authorities, and external vendors regarding tax matters, and provide training and guidance on tax compliance.
  • Lead coordination with tax consultants and internal staff to ensure tax compliance in new states.
  • Review, research, and respond to tax notices, inquiries, and questions from business and external parties relating to sales and use tax, property tax, tax audits and other tax matters.
  • Maintain tax calendar ensuring all tax filing requirements are met.
  • Assist with payroll and income tax filings.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in accounting or finance is required, CPA preferred.
  • Minimum of 3 years experience preparing multijurisdictional sales and use tax returns and strong knowledge of sales and use tax laws and regulations.
  • Excellent analytical, communication, decision making and time management skills along with a willingness to roll up your sleeves are required for success in this role.
  • Experience with financial and accounting software systems, Microsoft Dynamics AX a plus.
  • Advanced user of Microsoft Office tools including VLOOKUP and pivot tables.
  • Strong organizational and time management skills.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with attention to detail in tax calculations, filings, and recordkeeping.
  • Adaptability to changing tax laws and business requirements, and commitment to ethical tax accounting practices.
  • Ability to analyze complex transactions, apply tax laws, collaborate effectively with other departments, and identify and resolve complex tax issues.
